Welcome

A Message from the Chancellor

In 1965, my father, the late Dr. Taizo Kaneko, founded Tokyo International University (TIU) with the goal of creating a unique institution of higher learning, emphasizing an international approach to education. I also embrace that ideal.

During the last quarter century, TIU has greatly expanded its international studies and exchange programs to develop a network of relationships throughout the world. The establishment of Tokyo International University of America (TIUA) is our most definitive endeavor toward the development of a global campus, and it is symbolic of our commitment to offer our students a truly international education.

The next quarter century will, no doubt, continue to bring many changes and challenges to our world and our classrooms. Communication and understanding between our nations will become more critical than ever before, as we continue to grow more interdependent. TIU and TIUA are committed to promoting multilingual and multi-cultural programs in order to provide our students with the international education they need.

We are very excited about the growth of Tokyo International University of America, which was brought about by the joint efforts of Willamette University (WU) and Tokyo International University. The entire TIU community looks forward to the continuing success of this campus in enhancing cross-cultural education and further strengthening global ties.

Welcome to TIUA!

Hello from TIUA in Salem, Oregon, USA! This year we are entering the 18th year of this unique one-year American Studies program, created by TIU and Willamette University, which gives students an opportunity to immerse themselves in an American university experience for one year.

Students not only study English but also other subjects including sociology, politics, economics, intercultural management, literature, history, and many more. Over 1,700 TIU students have had the chance to participate in this program and it has had a great impact on their lives. Many are working today in professions that may not have been open to them without this intensive intercultural experience. Besides living on campus, students also can get involved in the Salem community through our Tomodachi (Friendship) Family program and many cultural and volunteer activities.

During vacation periods, students travel widely visiting places such as New York, Washington, D.C., Florida, the Grand Canyon, San Francisco, and Canada. Because of its location in Salem, it is also easy to participate in outdoor sports such as skiing, snowboarding, hiking, rafting, and windsurfing. The athletic facilities at TIUA and Willamette include several gymnasiums, tennis courts, swimming pools, and several sports fields. So, as you can see, there is a lot to see and do during both the school year and vacation.

If you are interested in learning more about TIUA and Willamette University, you should explore our web sites at www.tiua.edu and www.willamette.edu .

We hope you will have a chance to join other TIU students in Salem, Oregon.
