Global Management Issues &
Applied English for Global Management

This course examines global management. Topics may include social networking, organizational structure, business analysis, marketing, decision-making styles, leadership models, workforce diversity, human resource management, and current trends in international business. Topics will vary depending on the specialization of the instructor. The accompanying Applied English course for Global Management Issues is closely coordinated with the Atkinson Graduate School course. Applied English class work includes vocabulary development, reading, summarizing and discussion of the Global Management Issues course content.

Intercultural Communication for Management
This course develops intercultural communication skills for success in the global workplace. The course addresses intercultural issues related to management, appropriate cultural behavior in an international business environment, building international teams, and managing international employees. Topics include decision-making and negotiation across cultures, employee relations across cultures, creating positive first impressions, socializing across cultures and important factors such as how different areas of the world perceive power relationships, time, use of space, environment, and social structure. Students will have opportunities to practice listening and speaking as well as to use their new intercultural skills.

TOEIC: English for International Communication
The focus of this course is to improve listening ability, gain a greater understanding of English grammar and strengthen reading comprehension skills to prepare for the TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication). All aspects of the TOEIC are included: listening to statements, short conversations, short talks, sentence completion, error recognition, and reading comprehension. Students develop knowledge of vocabulary, prepositions and idioms used in schedules, registration forms, public announcements, advertisements and other typical test items. Several model tests are given, with an official TOEIC given at the end of the course.

Business Communication
The goal of this course is to learn English communication skills in formal and informal business situations. Emphasis is on skills needed to succeed in leading and participating in meetings, giving presentations, and preparing verbal and written communication. Presentations will include a personal profile, interpreting a graph and explaining a process. Participants will prepare newsletter articles to practice writing skills and participate in meetings to demonstrate discussion and vocabulary skills. An important component will be extensive practice in listening within the context of business situations.
