Oregon Intercultural Management Institute
Program Overview
The Oregon Intercultural Management Institute (OIMI) prepares students for success by simultaneously developing English language proficiency, intercultural communication competency, and global management skills.
It is assumed that participants have had little overseas experience and limited experience, using English in either business or social situations. The approximate English level is intermediate. As measured on the TOEIC, the assumed English proficiency level is a score between 400 and 600.
The institute provides practical English training that participants can apply to situations while working and living overseas. The focus is on the development of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills needed in a business environment. Examples are leading and participating in meetings, interviewing, giving presentations and communicating in English with business associates.
The institute also provides intercultural training that helps employees feel confident in cross-cultural situations. Participants develop sensitivity to business related intercultural issues and acquire skills needed for social and business interaction.
Additionally, the institute offers business management coursework that provides an understanding of issues and trends in global management. Topics such as social networking, organizational structure, business analysis, marketing, decision-making styles, leadership models, workforce diversity and human resource management may be studied. Specific topics vary depending upon the areas of specialization of the Atkinson Graduate School of Management faculty.
After completing the six-week institute, participants have new language, cultural and management skills that will help them succeed in their professional lives at home or abroad.
