Title: Knowledge is the Preface to Peace: Student Perspectives on the TIUA/WU Relationship

Abstract: Engraved on the Willamette clock tower in front of Hatfield Library is the statement, "Knowledge is the preface to peace." This sentiment proposes that mutual understanding of those who are different is requisite for peaceful coexistence. Sixty-five years ago the grandparents of many TIUA and WU students fought as enemies in a world war in which many on both sides were killed. Today the grandchildren of those former enemies live and learn together at Willamette University. Each year, Willamette welcomes nearly 100 students from Tokyo International University in Kawagoe, Japan into the American Studies program at TIUA/WU. These TIUA students impact the lives of many Willamette students in a way that changes the perspectives of both groups. Recently there has been much talk on campus about diversity and the need for a greater understanding of the perspectives and experiences of those different from ourselves. This panel will explore the ways in which the TIUA/WU relationship has impacted the Willamette community and how this relationship can be further developed to maximize the potential for learning through diversity. Topics to be covered include: why TIUA students come to Willamette; what WU students should know about TIUA students; how TIUA students bring diversity to the campus community; and what possibilities are in store for TIUA and WU students in the next twenty years of the relationship.
