Masahiro Suzuki Wins
FCCJ Swadesh DeRoy Scholarship

News Release

The Foreign Correspondents¡Ç Club of Japan (FCCJ) has granted the 1st prize of the 2005-2006 FCCJ Swadesh DeRoy Scholarship to Mr. Masahiro Suzuki, a junior in the Department of International Broadcasting and Journalism from the School of International Relations.

FCCJ held an award ceremony and announced the scholarship winners at the FCCJ office in Yurakucho, Tokyo, on the evening of April 11. Mr. Suzuki won the 1st prize and the 500,000-yen (approx. US$4,200) scholarship.

This scholarship was given this year for the first time to find promising students and support their study to become international journalist. Judges included seven international journalists who are active on the front lines in Asia including the President of FCCJ, a New York Times reporter, a Guardian reporter from UK, and a reporter from Router Japan.

Mr. Suzuki just returned from a 10-month study at Tokyo International University of America (TIUA). In his essay, ¡ÈBaseball and Yakyuu,¡É Mr. Suzuki compared baseball in the United States and in Japan as he talks about his interviews with sportswriters and his friends whom he met while living in the U.S.

At the award ceremony, Mr. Suzuki, who wants to be a sportswriter in the future, received many offers from professional journalists to write an article and to do internships.

The department of International Broadcasting and Journalism would like to congratulate Mr. Suzuki who took advantage of TIU¡Çs study abroad program for 110% and express support of his future success.
