TIUA Student Leadership Program Constitution

I. Name:??????????? TSLP

II. Purpose

TSLP was established to improve TIUA student life and the relationship with the Willamette University community, the Salem and local communities, the TIUA office, and the TIU home campus.

III. Membership???????????

A. Voting

All voting members of TSLP must be registered students at TIUA with the exception of the WU student in the position of Kaneko Hall Representative

B. Eligibility

TSLP does not deny consideration for membership of any student because of sex, race, religion, creed, national origin, handicap or marital status, except those qualifications of sex directly relevant to the organization's purpose

C. Term

Members will hold their positions from the time of election (within two weeks of arrival to this program; February) to the time when their program ends (December) unless they are asked to step down by the TSLP advisor due to unsatisfactory representation or inappropriate behavior

IV. Leaders

All TSLP Leaders are required to:

1. Attend all TSLP meetings, unless otherwise pre-arranged.

2. Represent TIUA student concerns and needs

3. Serve TIUA and WU students by creating recreational, educational and cultural exchange opportunities to the best of your abilities.

4. Work office hours as decided upon by TSLP.

5. Be a positive representative of TIUA and Japan in the TIUA, Willamette, Salem and other communities. You are a visible role-model for other students to follow.

6. Follow all relevant policies of Willamette University, TIUA, TIU and the laws of the State of Oregon.

7. Maintain a B grade average through out the school year.

TSLP Student Leader Positions

A. ASWU Representative

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work with ASWU (WU Student Government)
  • Work with the ASWU Building Bridges Program,
  • Coordinate with TIU's, TIUA Alumni Association,
  • The ASWU Representative will lead TSLP meetings

B. Student Activities Coordinator

??????????? Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Organize and oversee TIUA events (small and large) and activities,
  • Work with W.E.B. Programming Board
  • Create a monthly activities calendar for TIUA students.
  • Help TIUA students join activities

C. JACE (Japanese & American Cultural Exchange) Coordinator

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Create cultural exchange opportunities for TIUA students and Campus and community groups.
  • Work with groups in the community.
  • Attend N.S.O.C.O. Retreat (WU volunteerism retreat/trip) in the end of August
  • Help TIUA students join JACE activities

D. Community Service Coordinator

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work closely with WU student volunteer group
  • Attend the bi monthly Community Outreach Program (COP) meeting
  • Plan at least 3 volunteer activities each semester.
  • Attend N.S.O.C.O. retreat/trip in the end of August with COP students.
  • Help TIUA students join volunteer activities

E. Intramural Coordinator:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work with Willamette Intramurals students.?
  • Attend IM Supervisor meetings
  • Assist with and learn about WU IMs tournaments during spring
  • Hold one tournament (with IM staff help) during summer and fall semesters.
  • Help TIUA students join Intramurals sports.

F. Strength, Health and Equality (SHE) Representative:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Attend the weekly S.H.E meeting. Work with S.H.E. members to organize and plan events.
  • Help TIUA students join S.H.E. events.?
  • Create opportunities for cultural understanding and exchange around Women’s issues.

G. Yearbook Editor:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Recruit members for the Yearbook Committee.
  • Lead the yearbook meetings.
  • Meet with Tomoko to understand general process for creating the yearbook.
  • Coordinate taking and collection of yearbook photos with yearbook committee and TIUA students.

V. Administrative Involvement

The Associate Director of Co-Curricular and Intercultural Education shall be an advisor for TSLP.? He/she will organize a retreat to help get TSLP Council started and attend TSLP meetings on at least a bimonthly basis.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Serve as a communicant of TIUA and Willamette policies and procedures;
  • Serve as a resource person and advisor to TSLP concerning past programs, campus resources and contacts, etc.;
  • Communicate TSLP concerns and needs to TIUA Administration;
  • Support and participate in TSLP activities;
  • Organize for and participate in workshops and retreats with TSLP members.
  • Provide leadership development opportunities

VI. Committees

??????????? General

Committees will be formed on the basis of need and at the request of any TSLP member. This committee shall have a TSLP member serve as an advisor.?

JACE Committee

The JACE Coordinator has the option of assembling a committee of volunteers.? This committee will meet as needed to discuss, plan, gather supplies and students, and implement school visitations, retirement center visitations, community service, civic involvement, etc.? During the fall semester, the JACE Committee will consist of a core group of volunteer leaders to carry out the above-mentioned responsibilities.

VII. Meetings

Traditional meetings

TSLP must set a regularly scheduled weekly meeting time, of which all TSLP members are required to attend.? It is the ASWU Representative’s responsibility to hold members accountable.? Members must also attend training workshops and retreats as directed by their advisor, the Associate Director of Student Activities.? Any TIUA student may attend the TSLP meetings, but only TSLP members may have a vote on issues.

Special meetings

Procedures for calling a special meeting are outlined below:

  1. Approval of advisor.
  2. Contact made and confirmation received from at least half of the membership to attend.
  3. 24-hour advance notice unless approved by membership stated just prior.
  4. Exceptions made to members not to able to attend due to academic or health concern

Order of Business

Procedures for TSLP meetings should be as follows:

  1. Call to order by the ASWU Representative
  2. Attendance
  3. Read over Agenda for meeting*
  4. Reading and approval of the previous meetings' minutes by the ASWU Representative
  5. Member/ Committee Reports
  6. Discussion of Old Business
  7. Discussion of New Business
  8. Special Projects Reports

*To have an item added to the agenda, please submit it in writing to the ASWU Representative two days prior to weekly meeting

Disposition of Minutes

The ASWU Representative shall post the minutes from the meeting in a timely manner, in a location easily accessible to all TIUA students.? It may be written in Japanese, but must have an English translation to accompany it.
