TIUA Web Policy

Purpose of the TIUA Web

The Tokyo International University of America Web (WWW) site is an information system that strives to enhance the life of TIUA students, faculty, and staff as they pursue academic and intercultural activities through a diverse, world-wide network of electronic resources. The TIUA Web also provides faculty, students and staff with an effective communications medium to distribute information to the TIUA/WU/TIU community and to the world at large about TIUAs mission, academic programs, learning resources and information technology, community activities, admission, policies and procedures, student organizations, events, publications and people.

General Guidelines

TIUA is an intellectual community committed to the highest educational and ethical standards. The Web site is a publication in electronic form, subject to the same policies and guidelines that govern electronic media with regard to copyrighted material, photographic images, sound prints, confidential information and libelous remarks. Material published on the TIUA web site is expected to reflect the community's educational purpose, broadly defined to include the breadth of its social and cultural activity, and to express the community's regard for ethical behavior, including compliance with Willamette University policies on Information Technology Usage and Acceptable Use of Campus Network.  No material will be published that violates any licensing or contractual agreement, law, or university regulation or policy. If institutional guidelines are violated or disregarded, TIUA reserves the right to suspend publishing privileges or remove pages while the matter is referred to the appropriate university body.

Procedural, Formatting, and Content Guidelines

In order to promote factual integrity, institutional consistency and style, legal usage, and technical feasibility, the TIUA Institutional Web pages will be created and maintained by the TIUA Web site committee.

Examples of material appropriate for the Web include TIUA publications, class syllabi, course schedules, job announcements, campus directory (office and box numbers), upcoming events, etc.

Examples of material that is inappropriate for the Web include:

  1. confidential material, including medical records
  2. software that is not in the public domain
  3. copyrighted materials in any form without the consent of the original copyright owner
  4. audio, images (i.e. photographs, painting or other derivatives thereof), videos or movies of people without their consent
  5. commercial, for-profit activities or advertisement in any form
  6. any information, confidential or otherwise, pertaining to other individuals without their consent.
  7. any images or data that are abusive, profane, harassing or offensive to people*

*When a complaint of abusive, profane, harassing or offensive material is received, the matter will be turned over to the appropriate TIUA office or committee.

Questions about material on the Web should be directed to the TIUA Web committee.

Individual Web Pages

Generally, only students, faculty, staff and alumni are eligible for personal Web pages on TIUA web server. It is expected that these Web documents uphold standards and guidelines similar to the ones set for TIUA Web documents.

Individuals are responsible for their own web documents. The university assumes no responsibility for these personal home pages, for the links from these pages, or for material in sites linked to the university's official pages. However, should a complaint arise about material in a personal home page on the Web, access to that material might be suspended pending further examination and consideration of these materials in light of Web guidelines.

Recommended by the TIUA Web committee: Barby Dressler, Wayne Gregory, Bill Nelson, Loren Waller on October 31,1996.

Approved by the TIUA University Council.
